Getting Started
I currently have a wood-burning fireplace and want to convert to gas. What are my options?
You generally have two paths: a gas log set, which preserves your open-hearth look with the convenience of a remote, or a gas insert, which is a self-contained, high-efficiency heater that fits directly into your existing masonry opening.
What information should I bring to my appointment if I am looking to convert an existing fireplace?
To help us find the perfect fit, please bring photos of your current fireplace (inside and out) and approximate measurements of the height, width, and depth of the opening, as well as the dimensions of the hearth.
I am planning a new construction project or a major renovation; what do I need for my first consultation?
For new builds or adding a fireplace where one doesn’t exist, please bring your architectural plans or a simple sketch of the room with wall dimensions and any “inspiration photos” that capture the design style you are aiming for.
Do you offer in-home consultations before I choose a fireplace?
We believe the selection process should always begin in our Edison showroom, as seeing our 30+ live burning displays in person is far more powerful than choosing from a catalog. Once you have selected a unit and a deposit is placed, our expert technicians will conduct a professional site evaluation to finalize all technical measurements.
Gas Fireplaces & Technology
Do I need an existing chimney to install a new gas fireplace?
No. Most modern gas fireplaces use Direct Vent technology, which allows them to be vented through a side wall or the roof, making it possible to add a fireplace to almost any room in your home regardless of a chimney.
What is the difference between “Direct Vent” and “B-Vent” technology?
We primarily feature Direct Vent technology because it uses a sealed combustion system—drawing air from outside and exhausting it back outside—which protects your indoor air quality and offers much higher heating efficiency than older B-Vent systems.
Does Ember Fireplaces offer vent-free options for spaces where venting isn’t possible?
We focus primarily on Direct Vent and Electric technology to ensure the highest level of indoor air quality and design flexibility, but we can discuss the specific requirements and limitations of vent-free options based on your local codes.
How much heat can I expect a gas fireplace to produce in my home?
Heat output varies significantly by model. We carry everything from high-output heaters designed to anchor a large room in winter to “low-heat” architectural units intended for year-round ambiance without overheating your space.
Can I operate my gas fireplace during a power outage?
Yes. Most of our modern gas units are equipped with a battery backup system that allows the fireplace to ignite and provide critical heat even when the rest of your home is without power.
Is there a difference in the quality of the flame between different brands?
Yes—much like the engine in a car, the burner technology varies by manufacturer. Some brands focus on a tall, lazy yellow flame that mimics a wood fire, while others specialize in a precise, architectural blue or orange “ribbon” flame. We recommend visiting our showroom to see these different burners in person.
Do you offer “Smart Home” integration for your fireplaces?
Many of our premium models can be integrated into home automation systems or controlled via a dedicated smartphone app, allowing you to adjust flame height, lighting, and timers from anywhere.
Electric Fireplaces
Do your premium electric fireplaces provide heat, or are they strictly for looks?
Electric units are “ambiance-first,” meaning you can enjoy the visual flame 365 days a year without heat. However, most models include a built-in heater that can provide supplemental warmth at the touch of a button when desired.
Installation & Process
Does Ember Fireplaces handle the installation, or do I need my own contractor?
We have our own dedicated team of expert technicians and installers who handle the specialized placement and setup of your fireplace. However, because we are not licensed plumbers, electricians, or framers, we collaborate closely with your chosen tradespeople to ensure the gas lines, electrical, and structural framing are perfectly prepared for a seamless installation.
What is the typical process for a fireplace project and how long does it take?
Every project is unique, but the process generally begins with a showroom selection and site evaluation, followed by a 4 to 8 week lead time for your custom unit to arrive. Once your site is prepared by your framing and gas contractors, our specialized technicians typically complete the actual installation in a single day.
What is involved in replacing an older, outdated gas fireplace with a modern model?
Replacing an old unit typically involves a “change-out,” where we assess your existing venting and gas lines to ensure they meet modern safety standards before installing a new, high-efficiency unit that fits your updated aesthetic.
Do I need to obtain local permits for my fireplace installation?
Yes. Because a fireplace involves gas, electrical, and structural components, local building permits are required to ensure everything meets New Jersey safety codes. We provide all the necessary technical specifications and “cut sheets” to your contractor or architect to make the permit application process as smooth as possible.
Design & Customization
Do you have a wide variety of units on display to help me visualize the final look?
Yes—our Edison showroom features over 30 live burning displays presented as fully realized design vignettes, allowing you to compare different brands, flame styles, and finishes in a real-world setting.
Can I customize the interior of my fireplace to match my room’s decor?
Yes. Most of our models offer a variety of interior liners—such as Reflective Black Glass, Grey Herringbone, or Ledgestone—as well as different media options like traditional split oak logs, birch, fire stones, or crushed glass.
I want to redo the wall or surround around my fireplace; can Ember Fireplaces help with the renovation?
While we do not perform the actual finish work (such as masonry, tiling, or carpentry), we are experts in the design and technical requirements of the surround. We invite you to visit our showroom for inspiration from our 30+ vignettes, and once you’ve selected a unit, we can provide the precise technical specifications—or even recommend a trusted contractor who specializes in high-end fireplace finishes.
Pricing, Service & Safety
How is fireplace pricing determined?
Fireplace pricing is primarily driven by the manufacturer and the specific technology inside the unit, rather than just the shape. Much like any other high-end product, every brand offers a wide range of sizes and configurations at varying price points. Your total investment will depend on the brand’s engineering, the quality of the materials, and the specialized features you choose, such as cool-wall technology or double-glass safety barriers.
Do you offer repair services for existing fireplaces?
To ensure the highest level of expertise and safety, we provide maintenance and repair services exclusively for the units that we have sold and installed. This allows our technicians to remain specialists in the specific brands we carry and ensures our customers receive priority support for the lifetime of their fireplace.
How close can I place my furniture or rugs to the fireplace?
Every unit has specific “clearance to combustibles” requirements. During our selection process, we provide the technical data to ensure your furniture layout is safe and meets all manufacturer and local code specifications.
